Local SEO for Irish Small & Service Businesses
Most customers looking for a local service search for it, glance at the map results, and contact one or two of the businesses they see. Local SEO is the work of being in that shortlist — and of making sure the people who land on your site actually get in touch.
No ranking guarantees, no jargon and no monthly report full of numbers that mean nothing. Practical work, explained plainly, measured against enquiries.
Ongoing local SEO work is delivered through the Website Care + SEO Growth plan — see the care plans. Prices exclude VAT.
The Eight Parts of Local SEO That Matter
Local search is not one lever. It is a small number of signals, each of which can be got right or left in a mess. This is what we look at and, where it is needed, put right.
Google Business Profile
For most local businesses this is the single highest-return piece of work. Correct primary category, the services you actually offer, accurate hours, a genuine description, real photos, and the service-area setup done properly if you travel to customers rather than trade from an address.
On-page local signals
Page titles, descriptions and headings that reflect both the service and the place, service pages written in the language customers use, and a clear statement of where you are based and where you travel.
Consistent business information
Your name, contact details and address information matching across your website, Google profile and any directories you appear in. Inconsistency creates doubt for both people and search engines.
Reviews, gathered honestly
A simple, repeatable way to ask satisfied customers, and replies to what comes in. Steady and genuine beats a sudden burst. Never bought, never incentivised, never written for you.
Internal linking and structure
Services grouped under a clear hub, related pages linked to each other, and nothing important buried three clicks deep or orphaned with no route to it.
Technical basics
Fast mobile loading, secure hosting, one clear version of each page, a working sitemap and robots file, and structured data where it genuinely reflects what is on the page.
Local landing pages, only where warranted
A page for a town or county earns its place when it has real content behind it — jobs completed there, local specifics, distinct services. Where it does not, we say so rather than adding filler.
Measurement and reporting
Analytics and Search Console connected, enquiry sources recorded, and monthly reporting so you can see what changed instead of taking it on trust.
The listing itself is usually the first thing worth fixing — Google Business Profile setup and optimisation covers that side in detail, including verification, service areas and duplicate or suspended listings.
A Sensible Order of Work
Local SEO goes wrong when content is added before the foundations are sound. This is the order that avoids paying twice for the same result.
1Review where you stand
A look at your website, your Google Business Profile, how your business information appears elsewhere, and which searches you could realistically compete for. This produces a short list of what is actually holding you back.
2Fix the foundations
Profile corrections, page titles and structure, service and area content, internal links, speed and mobile issues. The unglamorous work that most of the benefit comes from.
3Make visibility convert
Visibility only counts if it produces enquiries. Contact routes above the fold on mobile, WhatsApp alongside phone and forms, objections answered on the page, and every enquiry tracked to its source page.
4Improve month by month
Reviewing what searches are bringing people in, extending the content that is working, and reporting monthly. No guaranteed positions — just visible, explained progress.
If your website itself is the obstacle — slow, dated or badly structured — a redesign usually has to come first, because no amount of local SEO fixes a site people leave.
Who Local SEO Suits
Local SEO pays off where customers search with a place in mind and where one won job or client is worth real money. If you sell nationally online, ordinary SEO matters more than the local signals.
- Trades and contractors covering a defined area
- Mobile and callout service businesses
- Clinics, salons and practices with a local catchment
- Accountants, solicitors and advisory firms
- Local retailers and hospitality businesses
- Any Irish business whose customers search with a place name
Trades and mobile services have their own considerations — those are covered on websites for tradesmen.
What We Will Not Do
- Guarantee a position in Google for any search term
- Publish near-identical location pages with town names swapped in
- Buy, incentivise or write reviews on your behalf
- Buy links or use any tactic that risks your visibility
- Invent statistics, awards or client numbers on your website
- Report on numbers that look impressive but say nothing about enquiries
Local visibility is only useful if it becomes work. That is the point of pairing it with a website built to generate enquiries.
Local SEO Questions
How is local SEO different from ordinary SEO?
Ordinary SEO tries to rank a page for a subject. Local SEO tries to make your business the obvious choice for people searching near you — which brings in the map results, your Google Business Profile, your address and area details, reviews and how consistently your business information appears elsewhere. For a business that serves customers in person, the local side usually matters more.
How long before we see anything?
Google Business Profile improvements can show up within days or a few weeks. On-page and content work typically takes a few months to settle, and competitive city terms take longer again. Anyone promising fast top positions is guessing.
Can you guarantee first place on Google?
No. No agency can, because Google's results depend on factors nobody controls — competitors, the searcher's exact location, their device and continual algorithm changes. What we commit to is the work itself, done properly, and clear reporting on what changed.
Do I need a physical shop or office?
No. Service-area businesses — trades, mobile services, callout work — can be listed and can rank locally without showing a public address. The setup is slightly different and it needs to be done correctly to avoid problems with the listing.
Do I need a page for every town I serve?
Only where each page can carry genuinely different, useful content: real projects in that area, local specifics, distinct services. Duplicating one page with the town name swapped is the classic mistake and it tends to hurt rather than help.
How important are reviews?
Very, both for visibility in the map results and for whether a person chooses you over the listing above you. What matters is a steady, genuine flow over time and replies to them. Reviews must never be bought, incentivised or written by anyone other than real customers.
Is local SEO worth it if I already get plenty of work?
Sometimes not, honestly. If you are at capacity and your enquiries are the right kind, a care plan that keeps the site healthy may be all you need. It is worth investing when you want a steadier pipeline, better-quality jobs, or to reduce dependence on referrals and paid ads.
How does this fit with the monthly care plans?
Ongoing local SEO work sits in the Website Care + SEO Growth plan at €99 + VAT per month, which adds analytics and Search Console, enquiry tracking, ongoing improvements and monthly reporting on top of the standard hosting and support. The lower plans keep the site running well but do not include ongoing SEO work.
